Voto de Chanteiro
One of the oldest traditional pilgrimages in Mugardos, shared with the neighbouring town of Ares, where the hermitage is located. Its origins go back to the vow made by the people to the Virgin of Mercy of Chanteiro in 1404, to be protected from the plague devastating Asia and Europe since the middle of the 14th century. The tradition of giving the Virgin an offering on the Pentecost Tuesday has been kept until today.
Magosto
Between the end of October and the beginning of November it is a tradition to taste roasted chestnuts and wine in all of Mugardos’ parishes, where people party until well into the night.
Sardiñada
In Midsummer’s Day, from the 23rd to 24th June, the longest day in the year, many bonfires are made, with roasted sardines, kippers, wine and bagpipes in order to terrify the witches.
Noite das Pepitas
The day before St Joseph, March 18th, groups of serenaders go out to sing traditional tunes to the town’s women, on the most romantic night of the year.
Festas patronais
In all parishes and places of Mugardos festivities are held in honour of their Saints. The most outstanding of them is the one taking place on January 7th, the Festa de San Xiao, patron saint of Mugardos. Another deep-rooted celebration, as in all fishing villages, is the Festa do Carme, on July 16th, where tribute is paid to the Virgin of sailors, with a maritime pilgrimage and the International Folk Festival in the harbour.
